Changes

Life is full of change. It’s unavoidable, inevitable—like death and taxes—something we all must face. However it’s not ‘change’ that’s of interest, it’s how each of us deal with said change that truly matters. Do we fight it kicking and screaming, edge into it slowly while gripping the past tightly? Or do we embrace it, move on and grow?

What does this have to do with my website? As you can see, there’s a long gap between this post and the last. Why? Well changes of course. So, you may be asking yourself, which way did I respond? Never one to do anything halfway, I decided to go for all the above. Not all at once, but in stages. This led to a long gap of non productivity while I tried to cope, not an approach I would recommend to anyone else.

So finally here I am, back to my website and my writing. Embracing the change in my life and funneling it into creativity. Sorry it took me so long

Now back to our regularly scheduled programming….

Out of breath, he reached the summit. The trek had taken him over desolate rock fields with no visible life.

“Snow, at least I’ll have fresh water.”

Turning in a circle, he spied his surroundings, an island. Unfortunately, the other side showed more of the same.

No vegetation. No food. Perhaps the tide pools would contain some edible life forms? Although, without access to fire, he’d be doing sushi.

Curse his luck. First his ship malfunctions, next his life pod crashes in the ocean, now land with no food. Could it get any worse?

The ground shakes, the smell of sulfur stings his nose. “Well hell.”

The scent of Big Macs and fries drew them, although only he was sentient. The years of training at the monastery having paid off, so to speak.

A moth, really? He flapped his brown wings, and guessed it could be worse. He could have come back as a germ or an amoeba. At least he’d been prepared. She however, not so much. Did she see this as heaven or hell? Or was she just a moth, drawn to the light of the window, totally unaware of having been more?

He remembered the suicide vest, trigger in her hand. Speaking about her god before sending them both into the great beyond.

Suddenly a bird swooped in, grabbing her in its beak before flying off.

Karma’s a bitch.

“Set up the satellite…” Jim turned in a circle while looking up at the moon. It made her dizzy just watching. “…here.”

Char unpacked the tech, glad to finally have a site. Jim, a brilliant scientist, was just a touch scatterbrained, a fact allowing Char’s subtle sabotage to go unnoticed. Pinging the Chinese moon base? Yeah, not going to happen.

Jim fiddled with the controls, adjusting.

“Here let me.” Char reached down, setting the dial to her preset coördinates.

“Hey! What do you…?” The com squawked with clicks and clacks, her native tongue unrecognizable to humans.

Char gazed up, her ship’s outline visible in the moon’s corona. She pulled out the bag of candy pieces, thankful she hadn’t had to resort to making her finger glow. Phone home, yeah right.

They swirl through me, relentless in their quest. Shutting them out is not an option.

They know what I am.

I glance at the gap in the wall. Ten sets of small human bones, and they call me a monster. Sometimes I hate this gig. “Anybody know an Abbey?” A sharp pain in my temple. ”Not Abbey, Abigail?”

“Yes, that’s my daughter’s name. Is she…here?”

“Yes. She says she’s sorry she skipped school that day. She loves you.”

Closure, now she can move on. I extend my black wings against the light of ascension, the young always go up.

The guard jerks my chain. “None of that Demon. I like to see you burn.”

Like I said, I hate this gig.

It turns, a constant twisting, sharp spikes protruding. Whatever draws near, it injures, indiscriminate in its actions, equality in pain., not a goal but a result.

“Keep your distance.” It shouts, barbs glistening for all to see. A warning advertised, not hidden away.

Subterfuge all.

Look hard, beyond the defenses, see truth peering out; blue-eyed and blonde. A rough gemstone, previously injured, secured behind prison walls of her own making.

She is dear and precious. Reach beyond her barbed defenses, set her free with your love.

She waits.

Are you willing?

“It’s happening! Grab the cup.” The Priestess said, knowing The Tears of Aramaya only flow once a cycle, renewal and rebirth.

The acolyte, head bowed, lowered the chalice beneath the sacred root bulb.

“Plunk, Plunk, Plunk.”

He collected them until the flow stopped, turning to her, cup upraised. “Drink my mistress, and let us renew the world.”

She gripped the chalice, her hands over his, and drank the waters of life.

Once drained, she drew him near, for she held the water, he the seed. Looking at the youth of his body, she thanked the Goddess old Germaine had died two months back. She took her duties seriously, but some tasks proved harder than others.

“That’s where it lives.”

Gran’s words echo through my head as I stare at the decrepit old truck down the hill.

“It’s the ‘tween times you needs to worry ’bout, evenin’ and mornin’. That’s when it comes out.”

I glance over my shoulder, the sun just a glow on the horizon.

I step toward the truck and place my hand on the pitted metal hood. Gran’s locket laced through my fingers. cool like her body’d been this morning.

I close my eyes and bow my head. Ready to meet the other half of the family, ready to make the Changeling’s Choice.

The scouts had been correct. The new world was hospitable.

They chopped, clearing a swath of land for the homestead, the tuberous trees falling easily to the warm ground.

In other areas, they cordoned off sites for drilling. The life blood of this new world, waiting to sustain them, within reach just below the surface.

Soon, the colony would be established, procreation initiated, population exploding. Such was the way of their parasitical existence, always moving, searching out strange new worlds to colonize and use.

Canine base Bobby-Sue-One would be up and operational within minutes.

“That’s one small step for a flea, one giant leap for flea-kind.”
